Sweet, and true to Appalachian culture. She portrays an essential dimension of southeastern mountain life: Transformation and the ability to adapt. In perhaps a more literal sense the book and story convey the significance of material culture in mountain life, one of the means by which story is transmitted. The 'old' fragments are creatively pieced together into something 'new' and beautiful, that carries - on the person of a young girl - the story of a community.

Nice story. I love all my books by Lauren Mills. They take you to a magical fairy land . My daughter loves them too.

I used to read this to the kids when I was an elementary librarian. Bought it for my granddaughter. Beautiful, empathetic book.

I just adore this story. It has so much heart. I like to read it and pair with the song "Coat of Many Colors" by Dolly Parton. We an compare and contrast the song and the story.

Loved this book for my granddaughter, age 8. A sweet story, great illustrations and a thought/discussion provoking story.

I bought copies of this book for my two granddaughters and one for me too. That way we can read together over the phone. This story is so very special, well written with beautiful pictures. Both girls, ages 11 and 7 loved it, and so did grandma. This one is a keeper for sure!

I bought this based on the description. It's very difficult to find books that young kids (mine are 5 and under) can understand about death. This handles it beautifully and introduces them to a new part of the country that they did not know about before. What I love is how the community pulls together to help carry out the father's wish and how the young girl was able to stand up for herself and overcome her situation. There are a lot of themes and messages in this book and it is very well done. We've read this countless times since I bought it and it's one of our favorites.

I read this to my children as part of the Five in a Row curriculum. It is such a sweet book. The first time I read it, I had to hold back the tears.
