It took my a couple of chapters to get the hang of parallel stories and then I couldn't wait to change back and forth.
Great story.

I enjoyed the 2 separate stories and how they connect. I didn't expect that connection. Nice surprise.
I love when the past and present are in stories.

Anne McFarland is a young artist struggling to make a name for herself, only selling enough of her artworks to just make ends meet. Her goal is to get her own exhibition in one of the local galleries and she is determined to make it happen even though no one, including herself, really believes she can pull it off.

That all changes after she buys a black, velvet coat from a second hand store, replete with an eye catching broche. It’s almost as if the coat boosts her inspiration to create great paintings that finally attract the attention of the gallery holders and subsequently brings her closer to the goal of having her own show.

Propelled by her new found creative energy, Anne does some research for a new artwork on the internet and finds a photo of a woman from the 1960’s wearing what looks like the same black coat and broche she just bought. She is intrigued and becomes compelled to find out what happened to the woman.

The book spans two story lines. The story of Anne in the present and the story of Sylvia van Dam, the original owner of the coat, set in the sixties. Although the woman come from different times and deal with different issues they share a lot of similarities; they must both overcome hurdles and face their fears in order to achieve their goals. At the end of the book the two storylines intersect when both women meet, become friends and support each other to reach their full potential.

The book is well written. The characters are well developed, strong personalities that are easy to relate to. The author manages to create a great atmosphere and the scenery is described vividly.

Overall this is a great story that flows well and is very captivating and enjoyable. I found it hard to put down and was sorry to see it end. Anyone who enjoys, woman’s fiction or historical fiction will enjoy this book. The book is in the same genre as those from Rachel Hore.

This story of two such different ladies and how they lived is charming. The time differences enrich the story and the troubles make them strong. I enjoyed this compelling read.

Hard to criticize somebody's baby, but this was a predictable and sophomoric story. I read to the end, however, so I must have cared about the characters to some extent. Chic lit to the umpth degree.

I really did enjoy this book- but only 3 stars because, though the story is wonderful & quite captivating- the writing is not as mature 7 well develpoed as it could be. that said-- it's very enjoyable- a fast read-- so get it

I enjoyed this book. It was very entertaining, no sex or bad language, just good, clean writing. The author brought her characters to life. I rarely read during the day but because it was so much fun to read, I found myself picking up this book in the afternoon.

I thoroughly enjoyed the two plots, and the way they intertwined. This book was suggested, after I had read an historical novel, so I expected a little more history. It is not a historical novel, nor did it pretend to be, but I think a little more historical background, especially of the 60's would have enhanced the otherwise intriguing plot. The only parts I did not enjoy, was the magic. What really happened at Betty Lou's hogan? This part was unconvincing. If Sylvia's spiritual awakening, was based on her hearing God's voice, i.e. a relationship with Him and a true conversion, i would have found the story more believable- in fact I would have loved it and given this book 5 stars.

Author Jill G. Hall enchants her readers with two separate storylines — one from the 1960's, the other, present day. They intersect after a critical truth is learned — "Bright starts on a clear night, sharing what you have with the community, and time with the ones you love" — culminating in an incredibly satisfying outcome.
