Being a Boston Gal,I felt The Red Coat was a reflection of the times. The characters were real as was the times.Family and traditions were held steadfast.Enjoyable read.

A well written, engaging story with rich, lifelike characters. For baby boomers, lots of anecdotes and references to people and places from the 50's and 60's. Didn't want the book to end.

I'm having trouble with this book. Too much tedious detail about things having nothing to do with the plot.

It is so much fun to read the story of Norah and her family as they move about in Boston. Having been born and raised in Jamaica Plain, (part of Boston) in the early fifties, I can totally relate to so many parts of this story. Thank you!

Wonderful story about the Irish immigrants. The jobs they had and how hard they worked. Centered in Boston, MA the author brings in many of the points of interest that are still relevant today.

Dolly is an amazing writer, so descriptive, as if you were there to experirence it all yourself. She'll put a smile on your face and tears in your eyes as she takes you back in time. Her characters are well developed and interesting and the story line is believable and exciting. Great author! Can't wait to see where the Red Coat goes next.

This was a completely refreshing story. As a Catholic I am often disappointed by the depiction of our faith in films and books. Not here. While honest and down to earth, it did not exaggerate deep Catholic piety in a family setting. Great family values, honest depiction of tensions and trials, the culture of giving and selflessness, hard work, honesty and integrity ring true on every page. I lived in Boston in the past and it brought back the fondest memories. I heartily recommend the book. Thank you Dolley!

Did not want this book to end. Lost a few nights sleep staying up late to read. Loved the characters. I imagined this is how my father grew up in Southie. Makes me wish I had asked him more about his childhood. Very nostalgic, especially taking the trolley downtown at Christmas time waiting in line to see Santa at Jordan's. I still have a framed picture of my Sister and I (Irish twins) with Santa. Really brought me back!

This was a great read about the high's and lows of the Boston family who acquired a beautiful, stylish red coat, the people that surrounded them and the city they called home. Those that have grown up in that area will enjoy a piece of history but even those of us who have not, the story captures a time to learn about or recall.

If you are Irish Catholic, The Red Coat: A Novel of Boston, would make for a fun read. This romantic novel shows us the pre WWII Boston society of Irish and Brahmin. The story is organized around that red coat which makes the reader wonder just exactly what did that red coat look like. The Catholic Church with its traditions is both positive and negative in its influence on the characters. You will have questions about some of the characters that you will want to talk to someone about. People leave their social caste for love; people leave Boston for new lives;People never forget their Boston roots.
