Mondays in My Garden

With the warmer weather we’ve been having here in El Paso, I’ve been spending a lot of time outside.

And I’m finally starting to see some hints of future fruit for all of my labor.

I’ve had a few friends message me via facebook recently with questions of HOW do I GROW this? or that? and I got to thinking – maybe these things would interest all of you too – So tell me! What are your garden questions? What are your garden dreams? And what are your creative obstacles?

One of my biggest challenges when we were living in Germany, was growing everything in containers.
But that didn’t stop me from growing two, six-foot cherry tomato plants!

Let’s see if we can brainstorm some creative ideas to help each other!

And perhaps we can come up with a catchy name like Mondays in My Garden?

How does that sound for a blog series or link party?

Your tomato plants look amazing! We had 6 of them last year and they produced so many tomatoes I have to make tomato sauce out of them and can them.

I do all container gardening and the only thing I’ve really had success with is tomatoes. Well, and herbs, but it’s hard to kill basil. ;)

I had to do completely container gardening while we lived in Germany! My children LOVED planting, growing, and picking radishes and carrots that we grew in window boxes! I even brought the carrots into my son’s prekindergarten class to share / teach about gardening!

YAY! I planted my tomatoes and strawberries yesterday (well, the neighborhood kids did). Here are my questions:
    1. When do I fertilize?
    2. when should I put the stand in to help it grow?
    3. When should I move them to bigger pots? (they’re actually in pretty big pots right now)

1 – This depends on what type of soil you used – Did you plant them in potting soil that already has a slow release fertilizer included in the mixture? If so, then you don’t need to!

2 – I would put the stand in now so I don’t forget! You can wait a few weeks – try to put it in before the plant really needs it.

3 – I would plant them in the final pot now if you can – that way you can avoid trying to transplant a large heavy plant and potential break branches in the process.

Where’s a good place to start a container garden on an east facing balcony? I’m so clueless on the subject.

Where do you live? Your location will tell you when it is safe to start planting things outside (after the risk of frost is over) but you can always go buy some large containers and potting soil now to start planning – and spread out the cost of materials!
