2013: It’s time to #trimthefat

January 3, 2013

Family, Frugal Living

2012 was a year of big challenges for our family.
Reintegration from an extended deployment is not just a 6 month process.
(and I promise to share more of that story as time goes by…)

So as we continue to move forward, I want to adopt a new family mantra for 2013…

“Trim. The. Fat.”

Did you hear that kids? Are you taking notes? Yes? Ok…

Clark Kent is working on a new story! #superman

Mostly this applies to actively eating healthier foods and adding 30 minutes of exercise each day.

This doesn’t mean I’m completely giving up bread.
This doesn’t mean I’m going to run 5 miles a day.
This doesn’t mean I’m going to be drinking 8 gallons of water a day.

But it DOES mean I’m going to to eat less (portion size) and do more (get off my booty).

The #Trimthefat mantra is also going to apply to our budget.
Since moving back to the states from Germany, we haven’t been actively saving.
(This bothers me. I know. I’m weird like that.)

Between buying things for our new house and indulging ourselves in the land of 24 hour accessibility
- yeah – we need some serious moderation!

(Dear Target, I’m sorry. But we need to take a break from our relationship. Love, Me)

Two random women saw me shopping "3 beautiful blessings!" #encouragement #perfecttiming #passiton

So.  For the next month, we are going to spend money on Food, Gas, and Bills.

Period.

Any other purchases must be discussed at length for more than 48 hours.

Period.

Yes that includes Etsy shops. No more superfluous schtuff.

Period.

I. will. commit. to. meal. planning. #menuplanmonday.

Period.

What's on your #menu this week? #menuplanmonday #milspouse

When I shared this idea of #trimthefat on our facebook page,
someone also suggested applying this concept to purging the clutter.

I think this is an excellent idea don’t you?
I know I still have a mountain of things that could be purged from our home.
Including my large rubbermaid tote of maternity clothes.
Except maybe those elastic waist jeans.

Who doesn’t need an extra pair of elastic waist jeans right?

War Letters, Ball Gowns, and Baby blankets. You might be a #milspouse is these are in your garage. #rubbermaid #armywife

The biggest reasons for sharing this mantra with all of you is #1 Accountability.
And #2 Everything is easier when you have friends encouraging you right?

So, in order to encourage each other daily,
I am asking that all of us use the #trimthefat phrase via social media!

If you use twitter, instagram, or google +, please use the hashtag #trimthefat
and if you are on facebook, please write your status update with #trimthefat and @Household 6 Diva to tag our fb page!

Care to join me? Let’s cut out the extras and start fresh in the new year!

My sister says its time for a new do! #fashionista #sheswaycoolerthanme

Do you have a family mantra or saying?

What are your 2013 New Year’s Resolutions?

How would you apply this simple phrase “Trim the fat” to your life?

Love the wait 48 hours thing — good idea.

    • Ann Marie @ Household6 Diva Says:

Initially it was that we should have a conversation with our spouse – but then we found ourselves shopping together and buying more than we should! :) Giving it a little time will hopefully weed out the impulse “want” items and leave behind the things we actually need!

  2. Amy S. Says:

WE have done started those things. No cable, nope, just Hulu and Netflix. (we get those from wi-fi blu ray players and those nifty receiver HD boxes, like you guys have for movies) Also planned meals, shopping (24/7) has been cut back drastically! Our portion sizes and MORE raw foods have been added! Lots of water and walking…we’ve been doing pretty good, but no resolutions for this year, just living each day, loving each other and KEEP MOVING FORWARD! :)

    • Ann Marie @ Household6 Diva Says:

“Keep Moving Forward” YES! Exactly! Something that is positive, healthy, AND attainable! LOVE IT! :)

do what makes your soul sing!

    • Ann Marie @ Household6 Diva Says:

I think that is partially what got me here! #nutellalovehandles ;) It’s time for me to live with a little more healthy moderation!

  4. Chantal Says:

We’re concentrating on saving and sticking to our budget this year too. Last year we did not save as much as we should, with the move and changing ranks (aka losing money), and the baby, it was hard!

We are currently stationed in Germany….perhaps we just missed you :) We did the trim the fat thing while stationed in New York before moving here. Although I called it my slow year, I bought nothing retail. I used my clothesline, no cable, or other extra fru fru, if we desperately needed something, I shopped second-hand. We rode bikes and walked where we could instead of taking the car. We enjoyed this time of learning about ourselves and growing closer. Great post!

I love this, I really need to #trimthefat in a few areas of my life! I think I will get on board!

  7. Rheanna Says:

I don’t know why but I have this sudden urge to start chanting – TRIM THE FAT! TRIM THE FAT! TRIM THE FAT!

  8. Sarah Says:

I love your new years resolution to #trimthefat ! I have also decided that it is time for me to do some serious overhauling on my food intake. I need to eat out less, cook more, and eat healthier stuff. I know it won’t be easy, but I’m telling myself that to start with I am going to eat healthy (or clean as some call it!) during the week and then be a little less caring on the weekends(without going overboard) Eventually working down to only having one cheat day a week! I’m looking forward to seeing how you do with your resolutions. It will be nice to see another person who has similar goals as myself. Keeps ya on track! Happy New Year!

  9. Jamie Says:

Great goal for the new year!

  10. Mindy Says:

Sounds like a great plan, we would like to save for a big European vacation this summer and trying to trim out some of the extras around here as well. Can’t wait to hear what else you have going on.

  11. Kylie Says:

Awesome Plan! Mine is to get organized, and to get ready for the new baby to be here! Q is currently deployed though so it’s slow going.

  12. Gina Says:

I am so glad we are not the only ones who went a little over board when we moved back from a remote location.
I have not lived near Target in over 5 years, so I had to giggle about you breaking up with Target.
I also only live 5 minutes from all the the 24 hour access places! So I decided after Christmas I was/am doing the same thing. Trim the fat!
Love the blog! Keep up the good work:)

  13. Barb Says:

I LOVE IT!!!!!! I see your hashtag on twitter and I feel so motivated to move. We are focusing on our budget and breaking the chains of debt. The hubby retires from the Army this September so we need to trim the fat there. I’m also focusing on my food portion sizes and getting up and moving.

When I was reading this post it was like you were typing it from my head! Target and I had to give up our relationship as well. I only go there when I have good coupons deals and it takes a WHOLE lot of self-control not to look at anything that is not on my list.

Great post!!! I am with you sista….#trimthefat

  14. Musings of Marine's Mate Says:

Love it and going to have to do something similiar.
