Civil War Living History

History, Military Life

Since moving back to “the States” I have been really looking forward to continuing one of my favorite hobbies – Living History.  For me, it is a wonderful blend of learning, sewing, cooking, and sharing it with others in real time. The mid 19th century time frame in American history was an era of huge transition. Men volunteered to leave their families to fight a war, which brought women out of the home and into industry, business, and completely changed our traditional role.

Over the past few days, I’ve been organizing some of things that have been neatly folded in storage for years.
Here is our canvas A-frame tent – Can you imagine living in a tent as a military spouse?
Yeah. Me neither. I like my mattress. And my air conditioning.
And my nutella.

8 years in storage and it still looks like it was made 150 years ago #civilwar #livinghistory

Have you ever attended a Living History event?

If you could travel back in time, what era would you like to experience/ live?

I would love to experience World War II. It has been my favorite time period ever since I was a little girl. I’m actually in the middle of a big research project about the time period.

I’ve only ever been to a living history event done by a museum. I would LOVE to be able to go to a Civil War Living History event. Or a reenactment or something. I’d also like to visit Williamsburg to see the colonial/pre-colonial history. I love all things historical. =)

Are you going to do it with the kids? When I was a kid, we went to Civil War reenactments every chance we had. I was always begging my mom to let us be a part of it. I even ordered a dress pattern but it never happened. Maybe someday I’ll do it but I do want my air conditioning. :)

Now that we live closer to some actual sites I am excited to attend a reenactment, my boys would love it! Are there are any websites I should be visiting for dates, locations and tips?

Most of these Civil War archives are still in boxes, or on microfilm, but a few have found there way online.

If I were to go back in time,I’d love to be in the 80′s and earlier and just see how people lived those times when technology wasn’t in place as it is right now.
