Planning a garden of my own in Texas

Community Garden, Home & Garden

Lately I’ve been obsessed  errr… um… distracted by ideas for our garden next year.

The past few years while living in Germany, I’ve had the pleasure of growing vegetables on our balcony…

And helping to create the first Community Garden in Europe…

But now that I have a yard of my own, my list is constantly growing with ideas!

(Maybe we should start saving now for next summer’s water bill?)

What do you have growing in your garden?

And for my apartment living, renting a home, or living-in-on-post-housing Military friends:

What would you grow in your garden if you had a plot of soil to call your own?

Not much while still on-post (plus the drought just about did in what we did have planted) but next year….you name it, we’re going to plant it! Bonus points for the veggies we end up not liking but getting to use for the chickens, lol.

Ft. Drum has a community garden! I saw it when I entered through a different gate last week!!! (Did you sneak in a visit here to start it?!?!)

I would love to grow my own peas and carrots, nothing like a fresh carrot pulled out if the garden! Have you considered installing a rain barrel under your downspout? Might as well store up some free water and save on the water bill.

I just placed our seed order this month for when we get to our next duty station. (Peaceful Valley has a great sale going if you don’t have your seeds yet!) We ordered a bunch of herbs, both culinary and medicinal, LOTS of veggies, and some flowers that will bring in pollinators and also have medicinal and culinary uses. Once we actually get a house we’ll do our tree and slip purchases as well – everything from lemons to almonds are on our tree list, then asparagus and mushroom logs, as well as dragon fruit and other such things that we’ve come to love during our time in Okinawa (those will have to go in a higher humidity greenhouse, so plans for that are being made as well LOL). Our number one priority when we get into town and do get a house will be to set up water catchment throughout the property so we can reuse whatever rainwater we can collect this winter for the garden next spring. I’m hoping we can at least offset those water bills, if not completely get around them if we’re super duper lucky. *fingers crossed* I still have to place my order with Baker Creek Seeds as well – hoping for a sale from them. It worked out really well to go through both catalogs and pre-write my orders based on who had better prices on seeds and which varieties were carried; turns out they were a pretty even split on who had what for sale. I highly recommend them both, though, if you happen to have any preference to focus on heirlooms or organics for seed saving.

A garden can provide hours of outdoor enjoyment and supply fresh produce for your meals or canning. In addition to its culinary contribution, a well-planned garden can enhance the appearance of your landscape and complement the surrounding plants and structures.

We have a large garden at the back of our house and a small one at the front – most of the area is taken up by lawn, which has to be mowed every week, but we also have a pond with fish and a vegetable plot. We have lots of little paths in between the bushes so the kids can run around and play hide and seek. It’s all hard work but worth it.

How did you start your community garden? It was brought up as an outreach/neighborhood involvement idea for our church but I’m not sure where to start.

Those tomatoes and some vegetable salad will be cool for a garden.

gardening helps me to release stress but placing vegetable in my garden is a brilliant idea!
it will release my stress and have something to eat from my garden afterwards.
