Vibram Toe Shoes. Take 2.

February 16, 2012

Fashion, Home & Garden

So remember a few months ago, right after Seth’s R&R, when I decided to buy myself a pair of these?

And how my plan was going to ACTUALLY start RUNNING in them REGULARLY?

Yeah – life happened.
Juggling child care and everyday life became way too complicated.

My lovely new Vibram toe shoes lived happily under my dresser with an occasional adventure out of the apartment.
Even though I didn’t have the free time to run, they were still reeeaaaalllly comfy for everyday wear.

So when Seth got home a month ago, I decided I wanted to try to start running again.
“I’m going for a RUN” I announced one day.

I put on some comfy sweats, strapped on my toe shoes,
and confidently went outside to embrace the freedom of the open road.

Here is what I learned in less than 5 minutes.

1 – Running outside with bare foot shoes on a snowy January day -

is just like running bare foot in the snow.

Go figure.

2 – While I have mentally matured and added knowledge and wise experiences to my brain since high school,

I have not physically matured and added muscle and strength to my body.

In fact. I’ve not added muscle at all.

I needed a new plan. And a spoon.

“Why don’t you grab your keys and go to one of the gyms on post?”

Um. Good question.

(This two parent household thing is something I could get used to!)

How often do you find time exercise in your busy life?

What are your thoughts on these new fangled ‘Flintstone Feet” type shoes?

I’ve been so intrigued by those shoes ever since I saw a chick wearing them at the park one day. I think I’m going to have to break down and get some eventually, because regular running shoes and I really don’t mix very well!

I love my FiveFingers! Mine are KSOs in that very same color, even. :-) For a little bit of additional comfort and warmth, you might want to try a pair of Injinji toe socks. For snow, though, the KSOs are not ideal; your feet will get soaked whether you’re wearing socks or not. During the winter, my toe shoes pretty much stay inside; I’m still on a quest to find a more appropriate minimalist shoe for cold/wet weather.

I have not yet tried these, but I love being barefoot, so I might, even if it’s only for everyday and not running. I do not think I could run in them, though, I need arch support, and I love my Mizunos something fierce. In fact, I am aching to get ‘em back on and start running again. ACHING.

That’s the thing – I have REALLY HIGH arches. Like when I walk across pavement with wet feet, my foot prints are separate pieces…. heel. pad. toes. :) I’m a TOTAL barefoot girl – and these are the next best thing!

My husband swears by his Vibrams (in summer… I don’t think he’s worn them in winter…) and he bought me a pair, but unfortunately my foot shape is not conducive to them (I have “runner” feet – my second toe is longer than my big toe, etc) and I got terrible blisters and rubs, despite starting out “gently” :(
I was most upset, because my husband clearly gets a lot of fun out of wearing them!

I’ll just have to enjoy the slightly lesser fun of wearing toe socks to bed.

This shoes are amazing. My husband got me into them last year. He’s been using them for a few years now. The calf muscles are the first thing I noticed having that stinging sensation of pain and growing. Of course he said that is because it is having your body function naturally instead of carry around flat boards on our feet. I wear these for walking, running, and just because. They are comfortable and easy to acclimate to.

Luckily, I am able to work out every day. :) We don’t have any babies yet, so I am able to go to the gym while my husband is at work. I can’t get past how creepy the shoes look! haha but I hear they’re wonderful, comfortable, great for runners. I just don’t know that i’ll be purchasing any anytime soon. haha

Zack just bought me a pair of the Vibram shoes last weekend! I LOVE THEM! I hate shoes. If I could go barefoot every where, I would. Flip flops are usually about the extent of the shoes I wear, or the occasional boot. After getting the vibrams though, unless it’s snowing I have no real reason to wear shoes ever again! :D After Delilah is born I can’t wait to start walking/running on my treadmill (since going to post just for the gym is a waste since we live 30 minutes out and I won’t pay for a gym membership) and when I feel like my legs are strong enough, I’m going to go run on the pavement. :D

I go to the gym daily, in fact training for a couple 5Ks this spring and summer :D I go when DS is at school so it works out for me :D

I don’t really care for those honestly. I mean if people are using them to workout (which they are made for) by all means do it. But I see kids wearing them around the mall and what not. It seems that it’s become the new “fad” shoe.

I have always wondered what those shoes would be like to run in. I’m not sure I could get over having something in between my toes long enough to get out the door! Now that my husband is back home I’ve tried to get out more to run (I have a half-marathon coming up, yikes!) but it’s still tough even with him home. And this darn winter weather doesn’t help much either. I’m a fair-weathered runner!

I’ve been running in my Vibrams for about a year now. I love them! I don’t run in them everyday… I wear my regular shoes and alternate. (Not sure why… that’s just what I do!)

I love my Vibrams! Just be sure not to go too hard too fast when you start out or you will end up with a foot injury. DH didn’t head the warning….LOL!
