Today I’m writing about something a little more on the behind the scenes side of blogging and photography.
You see, this blog is a one. woman. show.
Everything from the header graphics, to the photographs and links in the sidebar - oh and of course the content of every single post is created, edited, and published by me. So when something goes wrong somewhere, I open a new tab in my browser to a search engine and start looking for a solution. This week, my blog was hit by some serious Spam comments and needed some behind the scenes troubleshooting. I also did some serious organizing of my online photography files on a website called Flickr.
In order to share pictures with all of you each day, I photograph, edit, resize, and upload my pictures.
And after about 18 months of using Flickr, I have over 1200 images that were completely unorganized…
That is – until yesterday…
I spent my usual blogging time organizing my photos into folders or “sets“.
For example – here is my ‘family moments captured‘ set…
Look how little Maggie was…
It was a lot of fun taking a stroll down memory lane…. Like this one of our boys from over four years ago…
The cherry tomatoes that were on our porch last summer…
The subway in Washington DC during the MilBlogging Conference last spring…
The German gentlemen who helped me move to this apartment last September while Seth was in the field…
It was a little bittersweet when I came across pictures of our beloved Cookie dog.
But I’m glad I have a few fun pictures to remember her by…
Do you have a system for keeping your digital photos organized?
How do you keep track of your favorite files?
We have an external hard drive and I usually upload my favorites to Flickr -
which I need to do MORE of, now that they are organized!

My husband took pretty much the same photo of the ceiling in the metro station in DC! Love it.

Truth? My photos are scattered all over with no real organization *blush*. I will try and draw inspiration from you

I Just reorganized all my photos on my external hard drives… yes, hard driveS. I am so paranoid my computer is going to crash, or the kids are going to do something and delete all my files on accident or *something* is going to happen and all my stuff will be gone so I keep everything on two different hard drives… you know, just in case something happens to one hard drive and a computer. When I have some time I’m going to finish organizing the hard drives by “Documents,” “iTunes” (cause I’d be REALLY sad if my iTunes music/movies/podcasts/audiobooks were deleted), “Photos” (which is all our family photos and stuff) and then from there is sub-folders by year and month, and “Clickin Moms” (because I’m getting ready to take a photography class with them
) and then from there is sub-folders by year and month.

I’m bad when it comes to organizing m pictures. They usually are thrown into a folder labeled for the month they were taken and then left there. I have boxes of printed photographs (from before online digital storage when I still had everything printed!) sitting at the back of my closet waiting to be organized still! I’ve never tried Flikr, I may have to investigate!

What is your understanding of copyrighting photograpy? I’ve asked a lot of photographers and there seems to be a variety of perspectives on it. Do you watermark you work or worry about someone selling it as their own? I use Zenfolio for storing some of my favorite stuff and love the quality of their metallic finish. I have a collection of mounted 8×10′s that I started in 1978 when I worked in a dark-room for a professional photographer in Pella. I have a closet full of old negtives and photos from before digital days. I have over 16,000 in iPhoto and that doesn’t count edited duplicates or scanned images from old photos. I have lots of folders there. I have some on a portable hard-drive but am a couple of years behind in that. I don’t have much on Flickr because I was always worried about it being stolen and sold as someone else’s. Probably, an unnecessary concern so I’ve started using it a little more and sharing my less favorite ones on Pinterest. I’ve done quite a bit with Vistaprint and some with Shutterfly and Snapfish. It takes a lot to organize it, I will grant you that. What are your favorite editing tools? I don’t have photoshop yet. At one time I was burning them to CD’s and having indexes printed of them but that takes space too.
