The first few days that Seth was home, were blissfully wonderful.
He would roll over or shift in his sleep and I would be INSTANTLY AWAKE.
Then a happy wide sleepy smile would spread over my face when I realized why.
This ‘happy wide sleepy smile’ phenomena lasted all of…
3 nights.
Part of the challenge is also related to our three early rising beautiful angels.
Ahem.
As I sit here to type this, I we are on Day 7 of Reintegration.
(The day he marched into the Gym is considered Day 0.)
I am still not completely sleeping through the night.
Partly because my little girl has decided she needs to use the potty at 4am today and yesterday,
and partly because there is another person in the room with me when I’m trying to sleep.
For almost eleven months, I’ve slept contentedly on my side of the bed.
Usually with his pillow pulled down to alternately hug or cuddle my back up to.
But now there is a very warm person there.
Who lives and breaths and moves during the night.
And although I’ve found myself in “Franken-Mommy-mode” almost every morning this week,
(MMMrRRAAAAAAARRRR… MMEEEEE NEEEED COOOFEEEEEE!!!!)
I’ve also had the wonderful luxury of a 3 hour nap today.
I can rest.
Someone else is finally home.
Someone else can check that the door is locked at night.
And soon enough someone else can help little ones find the bathroom during the night.
Until then, we’ll just keep adjusting…
to our new normal…
And make absolutely sure the coffee machine is set up the night before.
(Remember this note?)
Do you have trouble sleeping when your spouse returns from a long separation?
What are some things you do to help you fall asleep while they are away?

Toddler: up at 4:15. Me: brain dead. Put in filter and coffee. 4 year old up (3 year old still sleeping). Made breakfast for girls. Came back five minutes later and poured myself a cup of day old coffee and didn’t realize it until I took a swig. Ugh.

I have the hardest time adjusting to that. I don’t know why. When Gregg was first home, I’d wake up about 3AM every morning and have the hardest time going back to sleep.

When my husband is gone for a long time, I sleep with a teddy bear that he got me when he left for basic training. And sometimes I fall asleep to a movie. I’m such a deep sleeper anyway that once I’m asleep, I’m asleep and nothing’s going to wake me up so there isn’t really an adjustment when he comes home.

I know where you are coming from here, when he gets home though I dont mind laying awake in bed with him there as its a nice feeling and I really enjoy it!

Every time we see each other I always have trouble sleeping, it’s part just amazing to have him with me and part not used to having another body in bed. Happy we will no longer have to adjust to each other once we are married in July!

I usually feel the same way, but this time around, I was able to sleep much better once he arrived. I also did the same thing for a year- hugged the pillow or had to put my back against it. Just glad he is home!
