A Daytrip to Trier Germany

January 30, 2012

Germany, Military Life, Travel

During the Roman Empire, this beautiful city was second only to Rome.

This is the famous Porta Nigra, which is latin for Black Gate, and was built between 186 and 200 AD.

Although Baumholder is less than an hour from Trier, we’ve never had the chance to visit.

So today I am editing over 200 pictures so I can share more of this ancient city with you.

And to introduce you to a few new friends we made… Meet Roberto and Keith!

You’ll never guess what we bought from their stand…

So I’m curious – How often do you travel an hour or more to visit new places?

once a month? twice a month? once every 6 months? Do tell!

Also stay tuned for more pictures and stories this week from our trip to Trier!

Trier is amazing!! The Porta Nigra, the Roman Bath, the Dom, the amphitheatre, the walkplatz, etc. – all except for the parking! O_O After we moved here and visited the Roman Bath in Bath, England, we found a connection with Trier. A Roman citizien of Trier move to Bath and brought along his own mini-travel size worshipping altar. It was inside the Roman Baths museum with an inscription.
We tried to see as much as we could on Mainland Europe during our 7 years at Ramstein AB.
Now stationed in the Greater London area, the kids and I try to get into Central London (just a hop, skip, and jump) once a week for a different museum, walk, play, exhibition, etc. Homeschooling affords us the time and opportunity to do this during the workweek when it’s less hectic. And it is WAY better to see the actual object or place or house of a person you are studying rather than just reading about it.

Just an after-thought, since you happen to be blogging about daytrips. There’s an awsome website for lovers of military history with places to visit in your area called http://www.ww2onyourown. You’d be surprised at what you drive by everyday on the autobahn! :)

I LOVED Trier when we visited a couple of years ago! We haven’t been doing too many day trips lately but that is about to change because I have some places that need to get knocked off my list before we move!

I was in Trier once. At night. We went to a pub. If I ever get back to Europe, I’ll have to make my way back there!

Love, love, love Trier. For some reason I just love the vibe there. It is the perfect place to take visitor’s to Germany as it is not too far, but tons to see.

Glad you were able to take some time there. Your photos are the best, I think you should be my official travel photographer as my photos never turn out the way I hope they will!

I’m always up for a quick day trip….the key is having others willing to do the same :-/

ONLY 200??? Really? You couldn’t do better? I think I took 1000 when we went. ROTF. And we went twice because we didn’t get to do it all. I’d love to go again.

    Love that first picture!
