Preparing for Deployment: Life in slow motion

February 19, 2011

Military Life, Predeployment

Lately I feel like I’m living life in slow motion.

My husband has all of his bags packed.
I’ve sewn countless patches on pieces of gear.
He has rotated the tires and changed the oil in the van.

Several Power of Attorneys and Wills have been updated.
There are 7 gallons of laundry detergent cached in the laundry room.
A box with extra deodorant and razor blades is waiting to be mailed once he’s there.

We’ve spoken to our children about the months ahead.
We’ve made Daddy loves me boxes.
We’re making Xs on the calendar.

There is nothing left to do.
Nothing left to prepare.

Just time to wait.

Time to try to enjoy
without thinking too much
without talking too much
without crying too much

about everything that is coming.

We’ve been through this before, so we take heart in knowing this time is temporary.

Deployments can be a rollar coaster of emotions.

And although at times it might be easier to just close my eyes and hang on…

Sometimes you just have to put your hands in the air and try to enjoy the ride!

Have you ever been separated from your spouse?

How do you feel during the months/weeks before a long separation?
