The Washerwoman of Baumholder

Near the center of town, there is a fountain statue of a woman washing her clothes.

During my recent historic tour of Baumholder, I learned how our local area was a well known for its freshwater springs.  Which is also why the town built a surrounding stone wall in the 16th century – to both protect its resources and earn a profit to help support the community.

I am fascinated by this statue both as a piece of art and as a representation of the past.

Who was this woman? Were her children playing nearby under a tree? Did she come here often with other women from the village to wash clothes? How far did she walk? What was her life like?
